Equipped with a wide understanding of new critical theories, a pride of Malaysian literary roots and the insight of a practising poet, Professor Muhammad returns to the varied and rich traditions of Malay literature to the oral as well as the chirographic and the printed. He contributes his perspective towards the study of the narrative hikayats, pantuns, and syairs. From their lines, words and nuances, he has unravelled concepts of authorship, text and genre that enlighten this dark territory of Malay poetics
Muhammad Haji Salleh, at present an emeritus professor, in USM, has had a long and illustrious career in the schools and universities, in Malaysia, the USA. Europe and Brunei-for about 45 years. He has taught and guided students at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. However, on the other side of the academic he is a poet, translator, critic, theoretician, a founder president of at least three academic and professional associations. He has written, edited and translated more than 50 books in all, some of them academic and ground breaking, others experiments with new forms of poetic expression. He is a well known translator who tackles big narratives like the Hikayat Hang Tuah Mishima's Spring Snow, Fauconnier's Malaisie, contemporary Malaysian poetry and contemporary Western literary theories.
He is at present working on describing a Malay philosophy which will include a concept of nature, native ethno-aesthetics, a concept of a community and nation, governance, basic values and a social base of human interaction. Prof. Muhammad has been awarded the Sasterawan Negara Malaysia (1991), Tokoh Akademik Negara (2008), Tokoh Majlis Sastera Asia Tenggara (2015). S.EA. Write Award (1997), and ASEAN Literary Prize (1977). On 18 March 2016, he received the NUMERA International Literary Award.
